Occasionally, a patient will have significant sagging neck skin, neck fat, or the presence of neck cords unassociated with facial laxity. It is very difficult for patients to hide these findings other than wearing turtleneck sweaters. In these individuals, it is possible to perform an isolated neck lift without a facelift to restore a clean and well-defined neck and jaw line. The result can improve facial balance and give a more youthful appearance and even the look of weight loss.
In the simplest situation of a relatively young person with fat in the neck but with good skin elasticity, simple liposuction may be all that is needed. If skin tone is poor or there is lax skin, it will be necessary to remove this excess skin and a formal neck lift will need to be done. In this procedure. separation or laxity of the underlying muscle layer (platysma muscle) can be corrected as well.

"Short scar" Facelift
In some relatively young patients with early facial aging the neck may need only minimal tightening. In these individual; it is possible to do a facelift without a neck lift. This procedure is known commonly as a "short-scar" facelift as only the facial portion of the incision is made which then does not extend behind the ear. This operation will yield indirect tightening of the neck particularly if combined with neck liposuction that will definitely improve the appearance of the neck if only minimal neck improvement is needed.
Once aging changes in the neck advance beyond a certain degree. A neck lift is needed for optimal correction.
